Quarrying and Archaeology

Quarry Equipment If you work in a quarry you will already know about the link between quarrying and archaeology. Why not have a look below at some of the most interesting archaeology finds the quarry equipment has discovered.

Quarrying and archaeology

Some of Britain's most interesting archaeological discoveries and remains have been made as a direct result of quarrying and the quarrying industry is a major provider of funds for archaeological digs in the UK. Over recent years, it is estimated that the quarrying industry has provided an estimated £10 million to archaeological causes. In fact, it is normal practice within the quarrying industry to give unlimited access to archaeologists when interesting discoveries are made. Quarry Products Association members subscribe to a specific Code of Practice on Archaeology that recommends standards for consultation and co-operation between operators, planners and archaeologists.

Some of the Most interesting Quarry Finds

  • The Warrior King’s Helmet - This Saxon helmet, which is one of only four discovered in the UK, was unearthed at a quarry site in Northamptonshire. It is one of a pair that carry the emblem of a boar on the crown, signifying that the wearer was a warrior king and dates from the seventh century.
  • Roman amphitheatre - Discovered at a quarry site at Catterick racecourse in Yorkshire, this Roman amphitheatre was capable of holding five thousand people.
  • Medical Instruments – Set of medical instruments dating back to the Roman invasion of Britain in AD43 were also found in a Yorkshire quarry. The set included iron and bronze scalpels, spring forceps, needles, hooks and probes.
  • Bronze Age Longboat – A 3,500 year old longboat was discovered in a Derbyshire quarry. It was 10 metres long and was still loaded up with sandstone blocks. It is thought to have been ferrying the blocks to a causeway construction site when it sank.
