  • There is an estimated 2000 quarries throughout the UK.
  • The quarrying industry has been responsible of the planting of more than 2 million trees.
  • Much of the stone used in the building of Stonehenge around 2500BC, came from rock loosened by glaciers and rivers which was then quarried. It is now believed that the ancient quarry which produced the “Bluestones” – the inner circle of Stonehenge – was situated on Salisbury Plain, a staggering 240 miles away. The quarry equipment used and the transportation method still remain unclear.
  • Each person in the UK uses on average four tonnes of aggregates per annum.
  • Hadrian’s Wall, and many other examples of Roman architecture in Britain, is made from quarried stone.
  • It is estimated that the average family uses around a lorry full of aggregates per annum.
