Did you know...?
- There is an estimated 2000 quarries
throughout the UK.
- The quarrying industry has been responsible
of the planting of more than 2 million
trees.
- Much of the stone used in the building
of Stonehenge around 2500BC, came from
rock loosened by glaciers and rivers which
was then quarried. It is now believed
that the ancient quarry which produced
the “Bluestones” – the
inner circle of Stonehenge – was
situated on Salisbury Plain, a staggering
240 miles away. The quarry equipment used
and the transportation method still remain
unclear.
- Each person in the UK uses on average
four tonnes of aggregates per annum.
- Hadrian’s Wall, and many other
examples of Roman architecture in Britain,
is made from quarried stone.
- It is estimated that the average family
uses around a lorry full of aggregates
per annum.
- UK quarries produce approximately £3
billion worth of products per annum.
- Many of the castles, churches and cathedrals
built during the medieval period which
are scattered across Britain were constructed
using quarried stone.
- Quarried limestone is used as an abrasive
in toothpaste.
- The construction of a new house demands
the use of around 50 tonnes of aggregates.
- Around 700 of the UK's Sites of Special
Scientific Interest (SSSIs) are or were
quarries.
- The quarry industry employs around
40,000 people in the UK.
