Quarry Equipment Health and Safety
Studies suggest
that on average about three quarry workers
are killed per annum and twelve are seriously
injured through use of quarry vehicles.
The health and safety regulations which
need applying to quarry vehicles, are likewise
imperative for all quarry equipment. Below
we outline some of the basic health and
safety quarry equipment guidelines.
Basic Health and Safety Quarry Equipment
Guidelines
As anyone who is involved in the quarrying
industry will confirm, health and safety
is of paramount importance to all quarries.
By adhering to strict health and safety
regulations quarries ensure the safety of
the staff they employ and the safe running
of the quarry itself. Below are some of
the most basic quarry equipment guidelines:
- Ensure that the quarry vehicles and
quarry equipment are suitable for the
work they are assigned to and relevant
to the conditions
- Check that all operators and drivers
of quarry vehicles and quarry equipment
are correctly assessed and competent to
operate the equipment
- Ensure that all vehicles and quarry
equipment is fitted with relevant safety
devices such as seat belts and that these
are used
- Keep a log of all faults in equipment
and vehicles and ensure that the correct
measures are carried out for dealing with
these faults
- Ensure that the general design of the
quarry is in accordance with the requirements
of the individual quarry equipment and
vehicle usage
- Put regulations in place dictating the
specific safety measures to be undertaken
for both quarry vehicles and quarry equipment,
this may include restrictions of reversing,
speed-limits, authorised personnel using
the equipment etc.
- Guidelines must be drawn up outlining
inspection regulations in terms of how
often these should be undertaken, in what
detail and who should do the inspections.
