Impactors

Primary Impactors are now considered to be more productive for recycling than compression crushers.

Compression crushers and primary impactors are the basic two main crushers used by aggregate producers and recyclers of concrete and asphalt rubble.

Compression Crushers
Jaw crushers, cone crushers and roll crushers are all utilised as compression crushers to break up materials and were designed to handle aggregates. Jaw crushers are normally used as primary crushers providing the first point of contact in the processing plant, handling uncrushed rock. Due to their small reduction ratio, jaws crushers are normally used in combination with cone and roll crushers in secondary and tertiary roles to further reduce the size of materials coming from previous phases of the processing plant. The jaw/cone combination is most common. However each of these types of compression crusher has limitations when used for recycling applications.

Impactors
Impact crushers shatter materials by striking them with blow bars mounted on a horizontal rotor. The speed of this horizontal rotor can be varied according to the type of materials being crushed and the desired output. During the first half of the 20th Century, impactors were primarily used as secondary aggregate crushers. However the end of the Second World War changed this as specific horizontal-shaft impactors were designed specifically as primary crushers to process the left-over rubble from the bombed cities.

Impactors Compared to Compression Crushers
The revised post-war design of impactors has major advantages over any compression crusher combination for recycling operations. In fact, primary impactors are now considered to be more beneficial in terms of their recycling ability, and for many other aggregate crushing operations. Recycling impactors are much quicker and have a larger reduction ratio than jaw crushers. Thus, they are more efficient and usually do not require a secondary crusher.
