Jaw Crushers – A History of
Crushing
If you have been involved in the
quarry industry for a long time you will
be more than aware of the sense of history
which is associated with quarrying. Not
only is quarrying the oldest industry in
Britain but it also provides archaeologists
with many fascinating finds and is one of
the major fund providers of archaeological
digs. Have you ever wondered though, where
some of the quarry equipment originally
came from?
Jaw Crushers – The Beginnings
Initially the first quarrying of
coarse rock was primarily achieved by breaking
the stone by hand at the deposit itself.
As the first completely mechanical crushers
and vibrating screens were manufactured,
they were set up as stationary or skid types,
usually adjacent to the deposit.
Jaw Crushers - Motorisation
The introduction of motorised trucks
resulted in the aggregate plants being located
further away from the deposit itself. The
jaw crushers and screens during this time,
however, didn't lend themselves to portable
mounting. The quarry equipment and plant
designs eventually evolved into a full line
of Commander-type plants, consisting of
jaw crusher and roll crusher combinations
on the same trailer with a horizontal screen
and closed circuit elevating wheel.
Jaw Crushers – Portable Plants
The 1960s brought about the development
of truly portable cone plants with a higher
capacity. Portable plants are popular for
projects with a limited project life and
when the location of the plant right at
the deposit is essential.
