Heavy Plant Machinery Dangers
As the concern
for children playing on heavy plant machinery
left unattended in quarries increases, the
Quarry Products Association are constantly
renewing their Play Safe…Stay Safe campaign
which has the backing by the department
of Health and Safety.
Heavy Plant Machinery Dangers for
Children
Although heavy plant machinery
is a necessity within quarries, it unfortunately
also poses a danger to children and those
not used to working with heavy plant machinery.
Climbing up quarry faces or on machinery
can lead to children being killed or badly
injured. Quarry faces are unstable and can
crumble underfoot. Heavy Plant machinery
can move or fall over, trapping a child
beneath it. For those with the correct training
and knowledge, heavy plant machinery may
be considered safe but increasingly quarries
are having to think about how they will
prevent children from playing on it when
the quarries are unmanned during holiday
periods. One answer for some quarries has
been the introduction of quarry security
patrols but this may be too costly which
is why the industry encourages the on-going
revival of the Play Safe Campaign.
Diving and Swimming Dangers
However, it should also be noted
that measures are also continually considered
in preventing diving which is popular in
quarry waters. Despite warnings from the
quarry industry and quarries attempts to
prevent the access to these pools, divers
are still visiting the quarries uninvited
and the number of fatalities is on the increase.
Swimming and diving in quarry lakes is not
safe as the water can be deep and so cold
it can cause cramp or the breathing equipment
to freeze. Every year as many as 20 children
drown in lakes found in quarries.
