Glossary of Quarry Equipment
Part Two of our
Quarry Equipment Glossary
Dragline - An excavator
with a bucket facing backwards which sits
on top of the material it is excavating.
It uses a pulley system to fill the bucket,
which it then swings away and dumps.
Hammermill - A rock crusher
which uses hammers on a rapidly rotating
axis.
Jaw crusher - A crusher
that breaks material by squeezing it between
two jaw plates, one moveable and one stationary.
The jaws are positioned so there is a wide
opening at the top known as the gape and
a narrow discharge aperture at the bottom
set to the desired output size. Normally
used for the processing of hard primary,
secondary or recycled feedstock such as
rock and concrete.
Loaders - similar to tractors,
loaders have deep blades and the front end
loader mostly picks up dirt and rocks. They
can also push rocks and dirt around. The
main job of the loader is to pick up rock
and move it to different locations or to
another piece of quarry equipment, like
a crusher.
Primary crusher –
This crusher is used in the first stage
of crushing to reduce rock to a size that
can be processed by secondary or tertiary
crushers.
Secondary crusher –
A crusher that receives feed from the primary
crusher, further reducing rock in size.
Short head crusher - A
second- or third-stage crusher.
Single impeller impact breaker
- A crusher in which the incoming feed drops
vertically through the chamber, strikes
rotating impeller bars and is then impacted
against breaker bars within the chamber.
Tertiary crusher - Crusher
that receives feed from the secondary crusher,
further reducing rock in size.
